Dog Licensing & Control

How to License Your Dog

Notice to residents of the Town and Village of Lansing:

Article 7 of the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law requires that every dog owned or harbored in NYS for longer than 30 days and over four (4) months old must be licensed in the municipality  in which the dog resides in.

Dog owners residing in the Town and Village of Lansing must license their dog with the Town Clerk's office.

Documentation Required to License your dog:

  • License Form
  • Valid rabies certificate
  • Spay/neuter certificate (if applicable), showing proof of alteration, if not stated on the rabies certificate. If it is not listed and you have no records, a veterinarian can examine the dog and sign an affidavit as to whether it was spayed or neutered.

All certificates will be returned to you.

Dogs can be licensed in person, by mail, or by utilizing the 24-hr drop box located in the foyer of the Town Hall (on left once you enter the first set of doors).

We accept cash, checks or credit cards (small convenience fee applies to credit card payments). Please make checks payable to the Lansing Town Clerk and mail to PO Box 186, Lansing, NY 14882.

License Renewals

The ID tag is good for the life of the dog.  You will only receive one when you first license them.

Dog licenses must be renewed every year and take place the same month every year.

Reminders are sent out at the beginning of the month they are due.  To be valid, they must be signed by the Deputy or Town Clerk, have an up to date rabies vaccination on file, and payment must be received.  A ticket may be issued if renewals are not paid on time.

Please notify our office if:

  • Your address or contact information needs to be updated
  • Dog has been recently spayed/neutered or received a rabies vaccine (certificate required)
  • Dog has been rehomed or passes away
